Discreet Winch   -   2002/08/12Viewed 110 times this month, last update: 2002/10/23

Not my truck, demo from Texas Rovers
Now that I have a real rear bumper on my truck, I really want to complete the job with a winch up front. I'm seriously thinking about using the Bearmach Discreet Winch Mount, and adapting it to use the Ramsey REP 8000.
This will cost me around $800, and I'd still have to get some recovery gear, but I think it would come in very useful. Especially since Chris keeps wanting to go into the mountains, where there are non-desert-like stuff such as mud and roots.
Further, I could have really used this, and a sand wedge when I got stuck on the dunes a while back...

On the other hand, why fart around with a 8000 pound, planetary geared winch, when what I really want is the Ramsey RE 12000, 12000 pound, worm driven winch, which has 50% more power, is twice the weight, almost twice the size, and has mechanical braking instead of friction braking. Bah.

Of course, I could always buy the RE 12000, put it in a nice box with a big battery, and handles... I dunno... Sigh.

Or maybe I should build my own damn winch mount, something that would accomidate the RE 12000, and is only a bit more obtrusive than the Bearmach setup. It would require some serious trimming of the bumper, and maybe even some of the grill, but then I would have an unstopable winch, and the whole setup could weigh less than 200 pounds...

OK, here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to take off the front bumper of my truck to measure the space I have to work with for fabricating a custom mount, for either the RE 8000 or RE 12000. If it's enough, then I'll make the mount, and save for the winch. If it's not enough, I'll go with the REP 8000 in the Bearmach mount.

Ok, I took off the front bumper and looked around. It is possible to fit the RE 12000 in there, but it would be major carnage, and there are only four 10mm mounting bolts. I don't really trust 12,000 pounds of force on only four bolts. So, I'm going with plan 'A'. The REP 8000 in the Bearmach mount. Sometime soon.

Comments:
Matt Bell (2002-08-12): I would go for the lighter one. I drove a truck with a HUGE winch on the front and it made a huge difference on the steering balance. It also made the front end dip a lot on hard braking.

Erik (2002-08-12): My truck weighs about 5000 pounds loaded. I've read in several places that it's best to go out with a winch that can pull at least 2x the weight of the truck. A 8k winch is 2k under that, while the RE 12000 is 2k over. It's a serious decision, as I don't think I'll want to redo anything once it's done. There is one more thing to concider: Chris' truck weighs 6k dry. An 8k winch would really have to struggle to get him out of something. Of course, I could just double it back with a snatch block...

Erik (2002-08-12): Oh, did I mention my other very top concern? Planetary geared winches use friction braking, which generates a lot of heat, requiring you to use steel cable. There are composite cables out there that snap without recoil, making them 100x more safe in my mind. However, they can melt when used with friction braking winches. So, I'd really like to get a worm gear in there, but all of those are huge, such as the RE 8000 and RE 12000. There is one other option, the Mile Marker hydrolic winches. They have the power, and the heat-less braking, but I'm worried about messing with my power steering too much.

bruce (2006-10-03): Ok, I have a Ramsey RE 8000, I own at 2003 GMC Durmax PU. I haven't had much luck finding a mount for it, I would love to mount it up under the stock bumper. Can you help me with anything you have found?? 801-558-8417

Erik (2006-10-07): Not for a GMC, I just haven't done any research there. Good luck!

Gabe (2007-04-14): Just got done installing discreet mount on my 01 disco - has want 8k winch.Wondering where best place to mount control box? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Erik (2007-04-20): Don't know Gabe, on the brush bar, if you have one?
